Engineering Estimation

Book: The Effective Engineer
  • The task of estimating the amount of effort and time required to complete projects

  • To better estimate a project, avoid being anchored when estimating

  • When estimating, use multiple approaches to cross-validate:

    • Adding up task estimates
    • Look at prior projects of equal scale and how much time they took
    • Multiplying by a constant based on your previous estimates
  • When estimating, be very clear what success looks like

    • Be very specific about reaching only that vision as fast as possible without any scope creep
  • One way to improve estimation skills is to train it on lower risk projects.
