Human eyes are trained to see depth relative to light from the sun.

For protruding items, we see light at the top and a shadow at the bottom

• For inset items, we see a shadow at the top and a bright bottom

Heuristic: Overlapping elements can create a sensation of depth.

• Ex: A dialog floating over the intersection of 2 background elements
