Brain Asymmetry

Book: The wisdom paradox
  • The asymmetry seen in brains between left and right hemispheres

  • It’s seen in a vast array of organisms and is ancient

  • As the brain learns, there is movement of activity from the right hemisphere to the left hemisphere

    • i.e. the novel becomes the familiar
    • This might be a property of all higher order mental processes
  • Creative people employ both right and left hemispheres to solve problems

  • Empirically, the right hemisphere deteriorates faster than the left.

    • This could be because, as we age, we rely more on our experience and expertise and thus use the left more.
